I: in my best interest

AlphabetChallenge

One of my goals for 2012 was 'self-improvement.' It really is a very broad area but in my opinion there's nothing wrong with that, because the specifics of it all will change overtime. The overall plan is to work on me so that I can get closer to my own goals and dreams.

2011 ended with the closing of one chapter and honestly there was no clear chapter that followed. I finished my undergraduate degree but didn't jump right into my graduate programme because I know I have a number of things to sort out (including short courses to complete and GRE studying to get done) before I'm ready for grad school.

During this period of sorting stuff out for school....I think it's the perfect time to fine-tune some 'me-ness.'

This means cutting some bad habits, improving the good habits, building some new habits, and as my lecturer once put it 'preparing to leave the nest.' Most of all it means taking in only positive people and situations so that I can be the best me I can be.

Vexation of spirit is a waste of time,
Negative thinking don't you waste your thoughts,
Verbal conflicts is a waste of words,
Physical conflict is a waste of flesh,
People will always be who they want,
And that's what really makes the world go round
      - There for You by Damien Marley

This may mean winning and losing some things, but I'm for whatever will build me up and not tear me down.

Toodles, I'll be busy unleashing my inner awesome!

surfs up!

A few weeks ago my hunni and I decided to go surfing....yup right here in Jamaica.

Let's not focus on my 'gym-needy' body lol

We had our class at the Copa Cobana Beach which isn't too far out from Harbor View. Our instructor named Luke has been surfing for quite some time now, and has even competed internationally in surfing tournaments (which is pretty darn cool if you ask me).

Now just to clear things up, I've been a bit afraid of sea water, because in the past I've come really close to drowning in the ocean. It's not that I can't save myself if needs be...but it's quite obvious how the pool and beach are two different situations!

So I honestly was really nervous to surf, but Luke was really cool and understood the situation with my nerves. He was there motivating us even though the wave just about ate you when you didn't keep balance on the board. lol

Also, as you can see the surfing beach we went to isn't one of those 'white sandy beaches' you usually hear about when persons talk about Jamaica. This one is a 'black sand beach',and because of that, it isn't a perfectly manicured beach with no stones and all that stuff. With that said, I will admit that I did come home with a few scrapes from the times I did fall off the board, but there were really no major stones with sharp edges like that of daggers.

Anywho, I can admit that I was extremely impressed with myself! Although I did fall off (or jump off) the board a couple times well, I also surfed a wave all the way to the beach....and I made it just about half way for another wave or two. This of course surprised my hunni and the other guys we were with, especially since Luke says usually the girls come and just chill and watch.

yay me for being out of the norm!

Overall it was really fun. I never imagined I would be at a point where I'm brave enough to try it, but now I can say 'I've surfed in Jamaica' or 'I've surfed before.'

I will tell you though....it was definitely a workout and my arms felt it for days!!!! Surfing 100% reminded me that I really need to get myself back in the gym and work on toning my body and improving my overall fitness.

None the less, you guys should definitely try it if you get the chance. Break out of your shell and try something new......you only life once, you're only young once and there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy life to the max!

blooming excited

I'm so excited and I just can't hide it!

This week I got the final logo for my charity....and I love it! I'm glad to have talented friends who can understand what I mean when I say 'you know....something like that and this together.' lol

I've got a million thanks to my friend Lauren who did the logo for me although just for kicks she had me waiting for ages! hmph

Anywho....here it is!

Graphics by: Lauren Watkis

For copyright reasons (among others) I'll only be releasing this copy; but get acquainted with the logo because hopefully by May we'll be all over the place working to have scholarships available for the 2012/2013 academic year!

Oh and you can check out more of Lauren's work at www.behance.net/laurenwatkis

But....you're probably wondering what the foundation is all about....

Bloom Foundation for Education is a non-profit organization that aims to improve the educational opportunities available to special needs students in Jamaica. Currently we are working with the Jamaica Association for the Deaf to make student scholarships available for the 2012/2013 academic year, and to complete special projects to improve the facilities available at their various Deaf schools.

As the foundation grows, we hope to provide additional services and opportunities including mentorship; as well as to work with other special needs groups. For now though, we are working closely with two Deaf schools in Papine, St Andrew and will be focusing on getting donors and sponsors to help alleviate the financial strain that many parents face.

So there's the basic idea of it all. We are now looking for volunteers and sponsors to come on board and be a part of the team, so feel free to contact me if you want to learn more about the Bloom Foundation for Education.

Look out for more blooming updates...especially the Coffee For Charity campaign. =]

welcome lent 2012

It's Ash Wednesday which means that the lenten season for 2012 starts today.

By now (like others) I have a plan as to what I'll be giving up or what I'll be working on for the season. Most people give up random things for lent, but instead of really giving something up, I try to reduce one thing or improve another. I try not to see the season as a 'short period to do things right' but more of a 'second new year' giving me the chance to redirect or improve specific areas of my life.

I think my best 'redirection' was about 5 years ago when I was in 12th grade. At that time I had started to take my health a lot more seriously, because I was seeing how bad habits were affecting my grandparents and their health.

Generally I was very active, but in the latter years of high school my knee injury and hectic workload somewhat toned down my physical abilities a bit. As a result, I got lazy and started eating badly and by the time lent came around, I decided that I would make an effort to eat better and take better care of myself.

Since then I rarely drink juice and soda, I read labels more than before and I avoid food that's too processed. Now don't get me wrong....I still do indulge in those things I really don't need in my diet (because they taste so good) but I try to enjoy it all in moderation. I also got more interested in working out, even just for my cardio....although recently I seem to have lost interest....but I'll be back on my workout trend by next week. (I hope)

You're probably thinking now what the connection is between my healthy decision and religion...

To me it is one of the many ways that you can look at yourself as a vessel. Logically you wouldn't put a damaged or unfit vessel to carry cargo....you wouldn't give a weak horse a heavy load. It really is just the physical aspect of 'a healthy and holistic life' and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Look at it this way...the stronger and more fit you are is the more able you will be to carry the loads of life. God won't give you more than you can bear, but I think the stronger you are in both body and spirit is the easier the load will be to carry.

So yay for my healthy decisions!

But this year....I think I'll be taking on something a bit more.

I'm hoping to get to a point where I'm more confident in myself and I procrastinate less. I'm generally an organised person, but I've noticed that now that I'm out of school (and don't really have deadlines for assignments) procrastination has taken over.

What used to get done in a week, now takes me two or three weeks....and this doesn't work well when you hope to have a project all set for launch by a certain date.

To some extent I wonder if my procrastination is a matter of me questioning my abilities...or questioning whether or not I'll get the response I want to hear when the proposal I send out. lol

I sometimes just have horrible writer's block that totally demotivates me....but I'm on a mission now to find a way to curb it! The aim is to be more confident and have more faith in the proposals and grant applications I complete. I think too I'm trying to have more faith in the general population that they'll be more open to lending a hand to those in need.....let's see how that one works out.

The religious connection to this decision is really based on the saying - THE DEVIL FINDS WORK FOR IDLE HANDS.

The more I procrastinate is the more idle time I have. By eliminating some of that idle time, there shouldn't be any opportunity for the devil to give me any work....which is never a bad thing.

So, with that said I'll be restarting my things to do list today and trying to prioritise and stick to it. Look out for a post about curbing writer's block....as soon as I find a remedy I'll fill you in!

H: how you picture entertainment

AlphabetChallenge

For my E post in the AlphabetChallenge I spoke about the TEENage Observer (using their slogan - every TEEN matters). This week I shall shamelessly plug the other media house I'm affiliated with - HYPE Tv (using their slogan how you picture entertainment).

I've been working with HYPE for just over a year now and it's been an interesting experience.

I can definitely say that I learn a lot about television production and I'm now a lot more mindful of those little intricate details that most people I'm sure don't take into consideration.

It really is a nice working environment and because there aren't many of us everybody knows everybody and for the most part we each have our own little links.

I've gotten used to the fact that my producer can just about tell what I'm going to ask her depending on the tone of voice used when I call her name...and vice versa. lol

Anywho loves, be sure to check me out hosting a new episode of the HYPE 411 every night at 9. Also remember to check out HYPE TV on Facebook, on Twitter and on their website where you can check out the live stream!

Watch the HYPE =]

that one person

Having a great day with all going well? Ok, maybe it's not the best most exciting day...but it's a good one.

Then there's that one person you interact with that seems to just pop your bubble with a single word, phrase or conversation.

DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN!

Sometimes you really can't avoid someone....and maybe even the convo you have with them just changes your mood a bit....but don't allow it to takeover your mood for the whole day.

Find the happy music, remember that motivational quote, think about that hilarious moment with a friend or in an extreme case, call someone to blow off the steam.

Each day is a blessing so it isn't worth spending your day miserable or stressed over one person (or even a few).

Make the best of each day....don't let negatives bring you down!

motivation from the naysayers

I've had an interesting day.....

To start, I woke up early (in comparison to my norm), and in a good mood! I was so pumped that I did a little mini-workout (aka ran up and down the stairs while listening to music) just for the sake of my 'good mood.'

While sipping on my coffee, I went through some emails and had a great business call that I think added to the goodness of my day and excitement about my charity work. Anywho, I got my little body to work where I just so happened to have a convo with a co-worker about almost the same thing I focused this week's AlphabetChallenge post on.

It was pretty much about the fact that persons are so selfish and unwilling to lend a helping hand, even when it'll take just about nothing from them to do it.

From there I really started to see things manifest....

I saw a few persons I had gone to school with. As usual there was that 'what are you up to now' conversation and after hearing about my interests in charity work and my foundation, they seemed a bit confused and I could tell they were questioning why I would work on giving to others instead of trying to get my own dough.

I smiled it off as usual and explained that I want to help because I see a genuine need. This didn't get much of anything more than a slightly condescending 'good luck with that.'

They say God connects you to the right people at the right time...I believe it.

Little after all that happened, I saw an email from someone applauding my plans and projects and wanting to know more about what they could do to help. This really made me smile and reminded me about the good morning I had, and the fact that a few naysayers really shouldn't deter a person and their dreams.

Based on that one afternoon email, I now have even more planning to get done! This means more proposals, more emails and calls and more organising.....but most importantly....it means more opportunities for my charity and myself.

So while I do my thing, and the naysayers keep talking...feel free to watch me.

G: give and you shall receive

AlphabetChallenge

Another late AlphabetChallenge post...but I've been so busy that Monday seems to just come and go. (sorry guys)

So we'll start it here:
The degree of loving is measured by the degree of giving.
               - Edwin Louis Cole

I've always found it a bit interesting how willing persons are to promote and support a for-profit endeavour...but not a philanthropic endeavour.

It's honestly something I noticed ages ago, but as I get more involved in charity projects I unfortunately get to experience it even more often. While I can understand that some projects ask for large sums of money that you really may not have, I'm still taken aback by the fact that some persons are not even willing to give even a dollar or two minutes of their time.....

Now don't get me wrong....

I appreciate the fact that many persons have to work very hard in order to provide for their family's and/or their own basic needs. But that doesn't change the fact that many persons who have an overflowing cup, are unwilling to give even a minuscule portion of what they have to someone who needs so much.

...From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. (Luke 12:48)

I've been working alongside the Jamaica Association for the Deaf and I have had the chance to see first hand some of the many challenges that the Deaf schools have to face day to day. Although not in a position to give them all that they need, I have helped them to solicit sponsors for school projects and I have been working with them to organise awareness programmes.

Currently my projects include the BH Paints Give Back Competition where Danny Williams School for the Deaf can win a paint makeover from the company. The catch: persons on Facebook have to vote for the school and the school must be in the top 14 voted projects in order to win.

Outside of Danny Williams and the JAD, there are many associations, projects and persons who need assistance. In many cases all they need is a small donation from a lot of people. Whether it is your contacts, your talents and abilities, a small contribution, help with promotion or even your ideas.

With 365 days in a year, I know that giving back even once a quarter won't be that taxing on your finances/schedule....

I urge you all to give back to your community, to associations and service groups that work for good causes. Look for a cause related to the field you're in or an issue you want to advocate for. Make that call or send that email to find out how you can help them by giving just a little of what you have to those who have very little.

Feel free to ask me about my charity and how you can be a part of a programme that raises funds and advocates for special needs students in Jamaica.

45-minute dress

The other night I was influenced by the design and sew bug (yes believe it or not I can do a bit of that).

I got my mom to do some of the fine-tuning when I got tired of doing it all (the somewhat short attention span is the issue) but more or less it was me. =]

The influence of course are the cute free flowing dresses that are perfect for spring. What's cute is that the material I used has tiny yellow and green flowers on the navy blue background.

I don't love the pic.....but it's the best one showing the dress.

All I added to complete it was a children's belt (yes that's right I shopped in the little kids department), simple accessories (because I had a play-date and meeting at a school that afternoon) and of course my handbag and wedges.

Although there really is no pattern that I can share with you...I can tell you that you can use a dress you already own, inexpensive material, and just a few minutes. =]

Joyful Noise better than expected

Last week my hunny and I decided to go watch a movie.

At first I thought we were going to end up watching one of those action movies where stuff blow up and all that jazz. But on the way there, I tried to get my word in about watching Joyful Noise and he really wasn't very interested.......

I guess when we got there he had a change of heart and I got my movie! (I know of course that next time it's gonna be 'his pick' but I'm cool with that)

Anywho!

The movie is based in the usual small town where things are just 'so and so' because of hard times. They all have hopes that a local choir would be their saving grace by winning a national competition (the National Joyful Noise Competition of course).

I refuse to give out all the details of the movie but I will mention that the actors selected for the respective roles did quite well and that the directors did a great job at the scenes and music selections. There really was a mix of different things happening in the movie...a little romance, hope, family and community. The only thing it didn't have was that constant naysayer that usually comes in movies like this.

For me I really did enjoy the movie...my boyfriend at one point in the beginning said "this is like a musical....there's a song every few scenes." I merely laughed because I know he only said that because he wasn't too into the movie yet....I did remind him though that the movie is about a choir. lol

Anywho, the hunny and I did read some reviews before seeing the film and many persons mentioned that the music seemed 'off' to them and that because of the different sounds they couldn't see a niche market for the movie. I couldn't relate...probably because I grew up listening to both gospel and contemporary/secular music and I enjoy them both. I have always had an appreciation for different genres of music and I am one of those persons who think that contemporary gospel is really not a bad thing.

I think a music lover will enjoy it....the R&B, pop, gospel fusion is a nice little mix especially with those popular songs into it. Many persons say they'll wait until it comes out on tv to see it, but I think if you can check it out in theatres you should.

my love for the Devon House Bakery

I'll admit...I have a weakness for dessert! So having a bakery so close to home is like a daily temptation.

Initially to be honest, I didn't love much about the Devon House Bakery (called Brick Oven at that time), but then I believe they changed management and from there the place became a little pocket of greatness. =]

The star of the bakery I think is their patties. Although it costs a bit more than the average patty, It has lots more meat making it a lot tastier, more filling and definitely worth every dollar.

patty from Devon House Bakery
I personally love the fish, shrimp and lobster patties. I'm generally not a fan of beef and chicken so I've had neither, but based on my sister's review: they're good too.

In addition to the great patties, of course there's a case full of different pastries and a cooler full of various beverages. While I've just about had a taste of everything in the showcase, I ca say for sure that the stand out pastries for me are the turnovers and the toto (a Jamaican coconut cake almost).

The cookies, cakes and danishes are good too, and their cinnamon roll drizzled with a little icing sugar is the perfect compliment for morning coffee!

Newho, while the bakery is all lovely and stuff, be sure to enjoy other things on the property. Indulge in the Devon House ice cream (which is the 4th best place in the world to eat ice-cream), have sip of wine at Bin26, check out the shops and to take a tour of the great house (which has a pretty cool story behind it).

Now after writing this I'm hungry.....so off to find lunch!

F: figuring it out

AlphabetChallenge

Sorry guys! I know I'm late with this week's AlphabetChallenge but here goes.......

No matter how old you are, there is always that sense of accomplishment when you figure something out.

After the trial and error phase, the bouts of frustration and the consideration to just give up.....there is that final exclamation of achievement when things go right....and it usually comes with great pride.

I've been working on some legal documents for my charity and I can surely say that it's been a bit of a journey trying to figure out some of these legal terms and other little particulars. While I could easily get help from someone to get it all done, I prefer to work on it on my own first and then, when I know I can't manage anything else, then I get help.

Without a doubt, there is still a whole lot for me to figure out, but the more I read and Google and all that jazz is the more I seem to be picking out stuff that make sense.

While working out some particulars yesterday for the charity registration, I noticed that in my life I'm at a similar phase. To be honest I think it may be a general phase that comes after graduation and before the big shot job you've always dreamed of.

The trial and error as it relates to job applications, the frustration that comes with wanting to progress but not being able to do it either financially or otherwise, and the consideration to just give up with pushing and to instead just work with things as they are (even if it means being totally miserable day in n day out).

I'm glad I haven't gotten to the give up stage....because I think for me that would be a sign of extreme weakness.........and I refuse to get there!

My method is to do things my way on my time! Instead of making things stress me out because they aren't as perfect as I hoped for, I instead give thanks for the small mercies and little blessings that come through the opportunities I have now.

With planning and patience, the right things will come.

I remember my Grandma telling me that after my graduation last November. We were talking about all the big plans I have, and all the little particulars holding me back from getting those big plans done.

I can 100% agree with her statement though...

I've been patient (for the most part) and been planning little by little.....and slowly I'm figuring it all out....so the right things will soon come. =]

post delayed....but I've got good stuff coming

After a bit of a crazy day I just noticed that my AlphabetChallenge post hasn't gone up yet!

not cool Kimmi!

But don't worry....I'll post it in the morning when my brain is fresh after a night's sleep.....I promise. =]

I've also got my two cents about the movie Joyful Noise that I saw tonight (it was better than expected), info on a great bakery you need to check out in Ja, a DIY project or two, and some more pageant talk.

Lots n lots n lots...so keep checking in.

DIY: overnight pimple remover

Two days ago I woke up with an atrocious pimple on my left cheek. I did my usual routine with my face scrub and all....but the pimple was not moved or shaken!

I honestly got a tab bit annoyed because the pimple was so large that even foundation and concealer could hide it. -_-

Then I remembered that in the InStyle October 2011 issue I saw a little remedy for an overnight pimple remover.

Here's the simple three step plan:

1. Ensure that the area is clean (I used my usual face scrub, then used a little alcohol to wipe the pimple and the area around it)
2. Put hydrocortisone directly on the pimple...more like slather it with the cream (I used an antibiotic ointment instead - Triple Antibiotic Ointment to be exact)
3. Cover with a waterproof bandage (Be sure to seal it all the way around so that it doesn't come off in your sleep)
It worked like a charm! The following morning there was no pimple!!

woohoo!

This really did make my day yesterday...hope it works for you! =]

1 year later....

Feburary 3rd (yesterday) marked exactly one year since I've been working with HYPE Tv as a host.

*yay me*

Currently I host the entertainment news feature - HYPE 411; everyday at 9pm. I've also hosted the weekly review show - Best of HYPE (BOH); and the weekly video top ten countdown - VTX. In addition, In addition to that, I've also host other pre-recorded shows for parties and events like Fun in the Son, Reggae Sumfest and Caribbean Fashion Week.

I'm slowly getting into live broadcasts and so far I've done their live show - Up&Live, a few times. =]

The experience has honestly taught me a lot about television production and media overall. I've gotten the chance to work with an amazing group of people who each have their own individual talents which just make them totally awesome.

I remember my first shoot at the Bob Marley Museum. Dressed in green and black (for Black History and Reggae Month) I was hosting VTX and got a script that kinda blew me away with the amount of information on it. lol

I distinctly remember the producer telling me to relax my face and be more cognizant of my facial expressions (particularly when I thought I messed up). Then of course I was always trying to ensure that 'my better side' was caught by the camera, and that I wasn't speaking too fast.

I think I've grown a lot since then. I'm more aware of my voice and some of the little particulars about it. I think I also better understand my facial expressions and can tweek them to fit a mood I may not even be in. lol But in the world of media I think that's perfectly acceptable....right?

Anywho, I've embedded videos from the HYPE Tv YouTube page showing cuts from two of my recent shows.

HYPE 411 - Feb 1, 2012

HYPE BOH - Dec 23, 2011

Of course what's there isn't all that aired so you'll have to check out www.hypetvjam.com or watch it on the tele to see it all.

Be sure to check out everything on HYPE Tv and to check me out on HYPE 411 every night!

my random afternoon thoughts

Today the weather is rather confused.......let's just say I went all out to do my laundry this morning (when the sun was at peak) and by the time the washing machine was done the sky was grey. Totally not amused!

On the bright side I found a way to hang everything around the house (of course they will have to get picked up before Mom comes home and has kittens). Sadly little after I got everything into a little spot...I open the window to see the sun looking back at me.

I find it hard to see myself taking the stuff outside at this point though....so they'll stay right where they are (until Mom gets here)!

On another note!

I realised last night exactly why I choose education as my field of study and not law. I was reminded just moments ago as I attempted to sort out some legal stuff for the registration of my charity organization.

Of course I'm here 'getting down to business' with my glasses on, my papers neatly spread across my bed and my little notepad for all my random thoughts (how cutely ironic)......but when I start reading some of these papers with legal jargon and all, I notice it really is just a whole lot of confused words to me.

I'm working through it with my dear friend Google, but sometimes even Google's got me confused. I'm not too worried abotu it though because I know that through my boyfriend and a few other friends (law students) I'll make sense of it all in no time. Until then....I Google!

Now about this notepad...

I look at the things I've jotted down on my little notepad, and I laugh to myself because it really has proven to me that my mind runs a mile a minute! I've got some stuff here that are doodled, other things that are highlighted/stared/underlined, and of course those sentences that are obviously unfinished (probably because I was distracted by my phone/tv/stomach etc).

In addition to all that, how could I forget the things on that notepad that are totally unrelated to what I'm working on! lol Oh yes, one random note about a possible dinner idea, another about someone I'm to call on Monday and a bunch of other ones (some of which I cannot even read).

On the bright side! I'm getting somewhere. I feel that today was more or less well spent doing some stuff that I really need to fine tune and sort out. I hope to have all things go for legal registration next week, so that by the end of February my charity organization can hit the road and start making a difference!

By the way!

You can help make a difference for the Danny Williams School for the Deaf by simply voting for them every hour in the BH Paints Give Back Competition.

VOTE EVERY HOUR HERE: http://bit.ly/siarhR

Until my other projects are all sorted out, be a darling and help me help them. =]

Now back to my reading, tweeking and Googling!

let's get on top!

This post is all about you lending a hand and getting my charity (Danny Williams School for the Deaf) a paint makeover from BH Paints.

It's super easy to help make a difference for these amazingly talented Deaf primary school students in Kingston Jamaica.

All you have to do is like the BH Paints Facebook page - Champions of Colour, click on the Give Back tab, find Danny Williams in the entries and VOTE! Or you could just click here!

Voting closes on February 28th and you can now vote every hour. So even if it's just three or four times a day that's good. =]

To make things even better! Each time you vote you get the chance to win for yourself a $40,000 paint project to use however and wherever you choose!

Here's the link to vote: http://bit.ly/siarhR

Thanks a lot to all who have been voting, and thanks to those who will start voting now.

cool inventions and ideas

Browsing the net I've stumbled upon some very interesting pics showing off various 'inventions' made to help make life easier (which is generally what an invention is all about).

Kudos to the inventors because these are some pretty darn creative things....I really do wonder though how well they've caught on with the mainstream crowd?

This is definitely something my heel tips would love! My only concern is whether or not it messes up the look of the shoe, and just how well does it work in the grass?

I figure this is a God-send for an amateur dinner host, or the new waiters at the local hot spot who haven't mastered the art of juggling trays.
