I'm here listening to one of our hot local radio stations and it hits me that there really hasn't been any hot Christmas songs this year. Usually by now we hear a good couple song that makes mention of the festive season and the summer songs kinda get pushed to the back burners.
A few days ago at work we were talking about it, and now that I've actually sat and listened to the radio all night I can fully understand to the issue.
To be honest, in my opinion it was generally a slow year in dancehall music. The diva's didn't seem to go above and beyond (except for the one and two) and the male artistes delivered but some songs were just so ridic. Young artistes came in and few delivered hard hitting content; and as it relates to the young but not amateur - they didn't do too bad.
Overall, it was as if there was a hault in dancehall music.........except for dancehall slangs lol we seem to have seamlessly moved from one to another with new ones coming in as soon as others got stale/annoying.
On another note, bands and live music got a lot more attention this year and a number of reggae/cultural artistes kinda came back into the limelight. As it relates to the business side of things, a number of artistes seem to have benefited from local and international endorsements and excellent performances which of course spreads the music to new markets. Also, the quality of local music videos seemed to have gone way up this year and we saw a lot more in depth concepts and top notch editing!
In other words.....while there seemed to have been a dip in the music...there was a spike in just about everything else. =]
I guess that's just how it is though.....we can't get it all perfect all the time.
a little bit of this, that and the other
